Truth is, it’s different for everyone with ADHD. Hyperactive brains have a whole bunch of different ways that a rapidly moving brain can show up, and inattentive brains have other ways. And then there are combined types. So no simulator is going to capture it all accurately.

At the same time, simulators can offer a sense of what kinds of things can be challenging — and that leads to compassion, which is key to supporting someone who struggles with ADHD.

So, here are two simulators to explore — a 3+ minute general video and a first person 2 minute video. They capture the essence of what it can be like to live in a brain that is moving a thousand miles a minute, tunes in to everything “shiny” or “attractive,” and has a creative energy that has a mind of its own.

Again, it’s a hallmark of ADHD that it looks different for everyone who has it. But there is a unifying theme that these videos illuminate, common experiences for most with ADHD: it isn’t easy paying attention to one thing at a time when the world is such a fascinating place!

If every parent, sibling, teacher, counselor and coach of someone with ADHD watches these videos, maybe there will be a little less judgment — and more understanding — for kids and adults who are achieving great things despite the challenging circumstances of a brain that’s wired to receive all radio channels at the same time!
