As parents (particularly if we are women) we often think we need to be able to “do it all.” In fact, many of us were raised believing that we should focus on and improve our weaknesses. This is admirable, but can also be a slippery slope. Several years back I read “Strength Finder 2.0″ by Tom Rath. His suggestion is to grab the opportunity to do what you do best every day. Doing this will help us to live happier and more fulfilling lives. When I reflect on times in my life when I have not been on top of my game, it was usually when I was being asked to do things that were outside of my natural strengths. Case in point: even though I’m an above-average singer, I’m thrilled that my inner-introvert realized that she couldn’t comfortably exist in center stage, and chose another major in college.
Typically we have choices with regard to how we spend our time. Why not spend it on things that you enjoy and are good at?! At the same time, surround yourself with others (perhaps even your kids) who are good at what you are not. I’m always asking my daughter to help me remember things, and the probability of recall is increased ten-fold. What are you good at? Do more of that today!
